Catholic White Out

Have you seen a stadium filled with shirts of the same color? We do it to show support for our favorite teams.

On May 17, 1981, in Krakow, Poland, as Pope John Paul II lay in a hospital bed after being shot, students in the Communist-controlled state organized into what became known as “The White March.” There were almost half a million Poles, all dressed in white, showing their support and solidarity with the Pope.

Inspired by this example, we’re asking all Catholics to wear white on Thursday, October 11, 2012. This is the 60th anniversary of the start of Vatican II, a time of year when white’s not commonly worn, and close to elections.

Please stand up for the faith and wear white on October 11 in the same spirit of unity and prayer that took place in Krakow, Poland. You can find out more at www.facebook.com/CatholicWhiteOut.

Baby Bottle Campaign Starts Soon

The Pregnancy Care Center of Union County, a pro-life support center, will hold its annual Baby Bottle Campaign between Mother’s Day, May 13, and Father’s Day, June 17. They ask that you “spare some change to help spare a life.” We encourage everyone to participate in this vital ministry. Look in the back of the church or PAC to pick up a bottle on Mother’s Day!

Inspired by Blessed Nicholas Albergati

Feast day: May 9
Patronage: learning

He was made a bishop when he didn’t expect it and then became a cardinal. Even so, he spent a great deal of time with the poorest families and blessed their homes.

Dear God, Blessed Nicholas Albergati is a reminder to me it’s much better to spend my time praising you than worrying about the attention I’m getting. Amen.

Who is a Christian?

This column was originally published in the Plain City Advocate.

Are Mormons Christian?  Are Christian Scientist Christian?  Are Catholics Christian?  Are Methodists Christian?  The list could go on.

Wikipedia says:  A Christian is a person who adheres to Christianity, an Abrahamic, monotheistic religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth as recorded in the Canonical gospels and the letters of the New Testament. “Christian” derives from the Koine Greek word Christ, a translation of the Biblical Hebrew term Messiah.

No Christian I know would be happy with that definition.  For most Christians, belief in the divinity of Jesus, his death and resurrection, and his second coming, are essential parts of being Christian.  That distinction would eliminate Mormons who believe Jesus was a god but not the Second Person of the Trinity.  Christian Scientists might pass the Wikipedia definition but not the more orthodox theological distinction.  Catholics, Methodists, and other denominations in the Christian family of faith do qualify.

But, who speaks for Christianity in such matters?  Is the confession of the Sinner’s Prayer a requirement for membership?  What about all those denominations that recite the Apostle’s Creed?  Aren’t they profess Jesus as the Son of God?  Naming yourself as Christian doesn’t count.  The name comes from being a disciple of Jesus.  Faith in him is the starting place.  Acting in the manner that he taught is also part of being Christian.

We describe some acts as “Christian” because they reflect behavior Jesus would have approved.  Good works do not make a person a Christian.  In his letter James says  “Indeed someone might say, ‘you have faith and I have works.’  Demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.” (James 3:18)

Who is a Christian?  One who believes Jesus Christ is true God and true man; that he suffered and died and rose again for our salvation; that he will come again to judge the living and the dead; and, one who acts Christlike.

Inspired by Saint Pius V

Feast day: April 30

Raised a poor shepherd boy, he eventually became pope, but he remained humble. He simplified the way things were done in the Vatican and established the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.

Dear God, in Saint Pius V we have an example of you qualifying the called. Help me remain open to your call for me. Give me the grace to frequent the Eucharist and Reconciliation often. Amen.
